What a waste
Editor, Daily News:
I am the parent of a second-grader at Vineyards Elementary School. I have no agenda other than my child’s education. I am extraordinarily pleased with the quality of education my child has received.
I watched the July 31 [2007] Collier County School Board meeting. I am appalled by the behavior of some board members and extremely concerned by the decision to terminate the superintendent.
I lived through the Dan White years. I watched the protracted process of hiring Ben Marlin, only to see him leave before he had really begun. Finally, we had a superintendent clearly committed to Collier County who calmed troubled waters and got the district back on track.
In my opinion, the Hinshaw & Culbertson report revealed some inconsistencies and inaccuracies which needed to be immediately addressed. Perhaps some censure should have been involved, but certainly not dismissal of a superintendent who had previously received high marks in annual evaluations.
The almost-frivolous termination of Ray Baker 20 days before the beginning of the school year is not in the best interest of Collier children. Wasting tax dollars on Baker’s contract buyout as well as the search and hire of a new superintendent is not in the best interest of Collier children. It almost looks like political posturing is a higher priority than education to some board members.
