Ready, set, vote
Editor, Daily News:
I will not add to or repeat the long list of misdeeds of Collier County School Board members Steve Donovan, Linda Abbott and Richard Calabrese in the current Ray Baker debacle, but rather direct attention to what can be done about it.
Clearly more than hand-wringing is required to break this 3-to-2 voting bloc that is well on the way to plunging the Collier County school system into endless, costly litigation that will distract from its mission.
Only one of these three is up for election in 2008: Abbott, in District 4.
An obvious solution is to replace her with a candidate who not only has the credentials but also the ability to focus on achieving excellence of education.
Voters countywide can vote in every School Board race and there are more than enough progressive voters across party lines to accomplish this goal.
The last time Abbott ran she was re-elected without opposition. I challenge voters who do not already know the reason for this to do your homework before the next election. One question you will want to answer is: Who were her main supporters?
Tasks for those who agree with this course of action:
• Urge qualified candidates to run for the District 4 position. Candidates who enter this nonpartisan contest must live in District 4.
• Urge progressive voters to really get to know the candidates and to vote!
